Nordfeldt was born in Sweden and moved with his family to the United States at the age of 14. He trained at the Art Institute of Chicago. In 1899, Nordfeldt accompanied artist Albert Herter (1871-1950) to Paris to work on a mural project at the Paris world’s fair of 1900. In Paris, the artist briefly studied at the Académie Julien before finding his own studio. Nordfeldt was dazzled by Parisian art scene, its modernism and forward-thinking. The city left a lasting impression on the artist which stayed with him for the rest of his life.
The next year Nordfeldt came to England where he studied with Frank Morley Fletcher (1866-1949), a master printmaker specializing in woodblock printing. Fletcher was particularly interested in Japanese printmaking techniques, which is what Nordfeldt hoped to learn from him. Overall, Nordfeldt produced fifteen woodblock prints done between 1903 to 1907, the majority of them are dated 1906.
