Ira Moskowitz was born in Poland. He came with his family to New York in 1927. After some initial success as an artist, he went to Israel in 1935 where he spent two years working at Kibbutz Kiryat Avanim near Jerusalem. He then returned to the USA, married and continued his work as an artist.
Moskowitz spent time working in Mexico and the American southwest. The artist also spent almost a decade in Paris where his work won critical acclaim. Moskowitz had a greatly successful career, earning himself the Guggenheim Fellowship in 1943 and exhibiting throughout his life.
