James Tissot: L'Eté

  • In 1876 Tissot met Mrs. Kathleen Newton (1854-1882) who was to become his model and partner. She met Tissot while living with her sister in North London. In 1877, scandalously for the time, she moved in with Tissot. For the next five years, almost all his pictures and prints featured her.

“L’Été” is Tissot’s study of Mrs Newton. The artist was greatly influenced by Japanese art and this work includes several features of the Japanese woodcut: a paper umbrella, a close-up viewpoint of the sitter and the abrupt cut-off at the edges.
